NEWS - "A REPORT OF RECENT EVENTS".

No where in the definition does it say anchor people, remote trucks, etc. We, as LPTV operators, need to redefine TV News. And the best term is non-linear news. Forget what you see on TV from the full powers. You need a low-cost way to get information to your viewers.

We are doing that in Nashville through the help of the Lebanon Democrat. They are located in a small town but know how to grasp technology. Their news staff have small camcorders to record the video as well as the print side of the story. They bring the story back, edit it, and upload it to the video server. The server then sequences through the stories. Most stories air for three days, thus, they are only uploading 3-5 new pieces a day. Low-cost news.

The format looks like this:

00:00 00:30 Show Opening
00:30 01:30 Headline News : CG & Voice Over of the Daily News.
01:30 02:30 Weather : CG & Voice Over 7 day Forcast
02:30 04:00 Video 1 : Possum Town Christmas Parade
04:00 04:20 Bump To Break
04:20 06:20 Commercials
06:20 06:40 Bump Back
06:40 07:40 Daily Sports : CG & Voice Over
07:40 09:10 Video 2: Sports Event Video
09:10 10:10 Obituaries
10:10 10:30 Bump To Break
10:30 12:30 Commercials
12:30 12:50 Bump Back To News
12:50 14:40 Video 3: Lebanon Christmas Parade
14:40 15:00 News Close
Repeat

A smart LPTV operator could get several local newspapers together from the area to give a broad view of the news in the surrounding area. This could be done with flip phones, a $400.00 computer from Walmart, and another $300.00 for edit software, mic and stand, etc. So for a $1,200.00 investment, a local newspaper could be adding more cash to their bottom line by doing local TV news. The most expensive part they already have, the staff.
