Programming

Under LPTV Economics we touched a little on programming and how much can you make.
In this section we are going to talk more about programming ideas and how they will affect your bottom line.
First, Local Programming is king. The more local channels, the more people will watch your station. We have a video on how to do a Low-Cost News that does not require anything fancy or a large staff to do it. If you are in a smaller market, work with the local radio stations and weekly newspapers. Maybe have a channel for each radio station and newspaper in the area. The idea is to fill 8 channels with as much local as you can. And they do all of the work!
If you are in a larger market, the major networks are doing the local news. So concentrate on the major ethnic groups. Not only are ethnic viewers underserved, so are their businesses. And look at the towns around the larger city. They too have radio stations and weekly newspapers doing the news for thier communities. Help them expand into television without having to build a TV station. They get new ways to increase reach for their advertisers and you get local programming without having to hire a large staff. Everyone is a winner!
While you are coming up with great local news, you need to fill your other channels. After local comes the networks that will pay you to carry them. A good reference point is $2,000 per million people covered in the 80 dBu contour, minimum $500 per stream, per month.
As for networks that want to offer you less than 1% viewership and take 50% of the avails, you would probably be better off doing your own channels. If you purchase a Masterplay from R & L, we can load it, free of charge, with several programming formats and playlist so you plug in your spots and away it goes. You eliminate the cost of satellite dishes, receivers, or expensive wideband internet feeds that drop out several times a day. And you don't have the headaches of triggering local commercial break. You have a video server there to insert your commercials anyway, so why not put it to work and keep all of the avails.
If you already have the Masterplay, we can load a drive with formatted programming and a playlist for $500. Compare that to 400+ hours of programming x 2 hours to create each hour x $12.00 an hour salary = $9,600. A $2,500 server or $500 copy fee seems like a good deal.
3 Hour Concept Research shows the average person watches 3-1/2 hours of TV a day. So why struggle to fill 24 hours? Take the best 3 hours of Classic Comedy Drama Western Movie Educational You Tubers Travel etc, create a block, then repeat it 7 more times, creating seperate channels for viewers. That way, a viewer can tune in anytime of the day, watch a solid three hours of great shows, then go enjoy life or watch one of your other channel. By having seperate channels, they also can pick when they are in the mood for comedy, westerns, etc.
So that is the R & L Programming Concept. Local is king because it makes you the most money. Then networks that pay you because you get a check for very little work. Then I would normally go a local server creating various programming genre in 3 hour blocks to keep viewers happy while you work on another local channel. When you have the next local channel ready, all you do is change the Masterplay playlist.
